Dom’s March Newsletter

With Easter just around the corner, there is plenty to do and see in the next month. There will be many representations of La Passio , in Esparreguera this will take place on several occasions during the month of March, April and May, likewise in Olesa de Montserrat. Both these villages are relatively near Barcelona and if you want to get the feel of what Easter means in Catalunya, here is your opportunity.
Two important dates are Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday  parks and other public places are filled to the brim with children waving palms to be blessed by the priest. The ‘palmo’ is given to the god-child by the god-mother, and on Easter Sunday the god-father will give the ‘Mona” to his god-child. Pastry shops and bakeries are already starting to display their “mones”. These are cakes or chocolate ‘sculptures’ in all forms and shapes. The chocolate figures are often famous football players, children’s favourite film characters, giant chocolate eggs…some of these sculptures are amazing works of art.
Apart from the celebration of Easter there are other events taking place during the month of March. Throughout the whole month you can go and try the little beans “favetes’ in the area of the Baix Penedes. Restaurants throughout the area will be preparing them in many different ways. On the weekend of the 8th you can visit the village of Godall in the Montsia where they have the Oil and Asparagus fair, typical of the region.
On the 29th there is a Medieval fair and Popular Xatonada in Sant Cristofol de Cunit which will also be worth a visit.
For those of you who like Jazz you have the famous Jazz festival of Terrassa that takes place during the whole month of march, and for those who like antique cars watch out for the Barcelona Sitges rally taking place on the 18th of March, if you have an old car you can take place in it too…
So as you can see there is so much to do , there will hardly be any time to work…Happy Easter. Bona Pasqua.
